The Store

The store started in one small room and has grown to include four rooms of an 1820's mansion located uptown, two blocks from City Market. Watch for our unique curved front door with leaded glass.

The Stock

We specialize in antiquarian and rare hardcovers, primarily non-fiction. We have an extensive art book collection, and many religion titles. Our biography section is very popular. We carry a broad range of history books, including several of local interest. Handy people will appreciate our technical section which covers everything from automotive to woodworking. Children and adults alike will enjoy our children's section which covers 1860 through 1970.

The Staff

Dave Shoots began the business in August of 2000, taking over the existing premises of another bookseller.
A life-long interest in books led to a degree in Journalism as well as a Masters of Divinity. Dave collects agriculture books and has been a flea marketer for more than 30 years. In addition to retail sales, he is in charge of purchasing stock and listing books for sale online.

Wendy (Shoots) Matheson has training in Broadcast Journalism. Her childhood dream of becoming a writer was realized when she started Cornhill Communications in 1995. Wendy produces a monthly community newsletter for West Saint John called "West Side Story". In addition to onsite customer service, she handles online order processing and photographing the books.

Bookstore Owners!! We need your photos and information!

Hello and welcome to the Independent Bookstore Photo Gallery! Our goal for this space is to promote Independent Bookstores by showcasing the stores with photographs and a short description of the business.

This idea came about after reading the Bookstore Tourism blog, and realizing what a wonderful concept they have come up with. People love exploring bookstores and we believe that most would like to see photographs of the stores before planning their visit.

One thing we have always done when planning a vacation is to search the yellow pages, or something comparable, for bookstores around area we will be visiting. Taking that a step further would be to provide a description of the store, the type of stock they carry, and to also have interior and exterior photographs for viewing.

Our hope is that this little blog will grow into something much larger, that will be helpful for all bibliophiles, with a need to divide by region in the near future.

Thank you!
